Registering Marriage in Australia

After making a marriage in Australia the concerned couple is required to get the marriage registered within 14 days from when the ceremony is concluded. This needs to be done if your marriage has taken place in NSW. The registration is done with the Registry of Marriage and is done in accordance with the Births, Death and Marriages Registration Act 1995 (S.33) and the Commonwealth Marriage Act 1961. In case one fails to register their marriage within the stipulated time, then you should contact the registry immediately.

While registering the marriage in Australia, the couple is provided with an official certified copy of the data that was registered with the registry. This certificate is usually what one may require as an evidence of marriage and suffices as a personal document. This will also help you get your name changed in identity proofs like driver’s license and passport.

Cost of Certificates:

The certificates can be purchased at a base cost and you may also want to add some more amount depending upon whether you want the processing to be done on priority basis. Here are the charges that you need to pay for both.

  • Standard marriage certificate costs around $53. You may wish to add $25 for Priority processing.
  • Commemorative package costs (includes standard certificate) around $77. You may wish to add $25 for Priority processing.

All certificates are distributed through Registered Post and include postage and handling. If you had made your marriage in Australia, you are not eligible for priority option. Also, this option is denied if you have sent your marriage documents in the last 15 days.

You can also opt for a commemorative marriage certificate which will be provided by the registry upon being asked for. Here are a few things you should know about commemorative marriage certificates, they are printed on archival quality paper and hence last longer.

The Commemorative marriage certificates are available in total 6 designs and each of them is unique. All the Commemorative marriage certificates come as a package that will include a standard certificate as well. However, one thing that you must know is that these certificates may not be accepted by many organizations and valid proof and hence remain for aesthetic purpose only.
