One may want to change their name for many reasons but there are certain formalities that need to be fulfilled before doing so.  There are various reasons that one may want to do it among which marriage is a common one. First of all, you need to check that whether you are eligible to change your name. The following people are eligible to change their names in NSW:

  • You must not be a restricted person
  • You are either born in NSW or you were born overseas but have been a resident in NSW for three consecutive years immediately prior to the date of your application for a name change.
  • There may be a case that your birth is not registered in NSW and a protection order has been made to protect you and/or your children from domestic violence. In such a case also they are eligible for a name change.

In case you want to get the name changed of your child, then an application for the name change is required from both the parents. You can go for a joint application, however, if the joint application is not possible then you may contact the authorities for the same at 13 77 88 and discuss your concerns.

To change your name you also have to go through a name change interview. This needs to be organized by way of taking an appointment. To book an appointment you may contact at the number 13 77 88. You can also contact the registry by way of mail to book an appointment.

Fees and Certificates

To get your name changed you are required to pay a fee. This is for registration of name change and also for a standard certificate that will be provided to you upon changing your name. This certificate then acts as proof of your name and can be used by various authorities for name updation.  For this, you need to pay a total fee of $179

Upon getting the certificate you are required to return original certificates with your application including any NSW Birth or NSW Change of Name Certificates and extracts.

Further, if a person is born in NSW they can choose either a Birth or a Change of Name certificate. This comes at an additional cost of $45.  If a person is born overseas, they can only have a Change of Name certificate.
