Can I Drive in NSW with a Nepali Licence?

Most of Nepalese International Students and temporary visa holders living, working, and studying in New South Wales scratching their head with this question. After the rumour flame spreading into the community regarding driving facilities for temporary visa holders enjoying in NSW, many rushed to convert their Nepali Driving license to NSW. According to the rumour says, Nepalese students cannot drive car and ride motorbike under Nepali license conditions after 1st of November.

Couple of big fans following TikTokers add some fuel on the rumour that created chaos in Nepalese international student community. The rumour was based on a DailyMail story that articulates overseas license holder drivers working and studying in NSW must get NSW driving license from November published on 11 August 2022.

 

Daily Telegraph has published a series of news on the overseas driving license holder’s driving facility in New South Wales. On the very first story on 10 August 2022 Daily Telegraph mentioned NSW government is working on to change the laws from November. That would revoke driving facilities under overseas driving licence for temporary visitors those lived than three months. A follow-up headline published on 25 August hints the locations where overseas driving license crackdown taking places.

And finally, last week Daily Telegraph published third story, the proposed rule to force temporary visa holders driving in NSW to get NSW driving license has been delayed until next year. Because of covid-led driving test backlog.

You can drive in NSW with Nepali Driving License

Nepali students and temporary visa holders living and working in NSW can drive under Nepali Driving License conditions as NSW government delayed for new stricter driving license regulation for visitors. Those who are in permanent residency visa or recently granted, they need to get NSW driving license within three months.

Though you are on temporary visa and planning to stay in the state moving into NSW driving license would be great. Often Nepali driving license comes with English details of not you need to get NAATI certified translation and keep both while driving.

If you meet following five requirements, still you can drive in NSW under Nepali License conditions: 

  • If you are on temporary overseas visitor visa
  • Have a current Nepali Driving License
  • Not disqualified for driving in NSW or elsewhere
  • If your license is not suspended/cancelled or visitor driving permission withdrawn
  • Carry your Nepali License with you while drive or ride (with a translated copy if not in English)
