There have been many migration-related changes in the new 2024-2025 budget. Most of the changes may not affect Nepalese visa seekers. There are three changes that I think will directly impact Nepalese visa aspirants who are looking to settle in Australia permanently.
- Reduction in Migration Planning Levels: The total number of places for migration has been reduced to 185,000 from 190,000 last year. Almost all these reductions in places have been made in the Skills Sector, which directly affects the 189, 190, 491, and Employer sponsored categories. This means high competition for these places will be in the coming year.
- One year Experience for 482 visas: From November 2024, 482 visa applicants must show only one year experience instead of the current two years. I have seen many Nepalese applicants who already have one year of experience in their field. Now, all they need to do is to find an employer willing to sponsor them.
- National Innovation Visa: I know many exceptional Nepalese talents who could not get the Global Talent visa when it was open. This new visa will benefit them, so my suggestion would be to start getting their documents ready so they can take advantage of their chance this time when it opens.

Announcements of the MATES program and work and holiday visas do not affect Nepalese passport holders. However, there may be changes regarding student visa number capping, 35-year age limitation for 485 visa holders, etc., affecting many Nepalese visa seekers. But details of these changes are yet to come. All these changes are due to the government’s strategy to reduce the net overseas migration. Thus, these 2-3 years will be challenging for every visa aspirant wanting to make Australia their home.
With all these changes, visa aspirants must plan their visa journey carefully. You may want to talk to a Registered Migration Agent who can interpret and apply these changes in your circumstances.
