The Australian Department of Home Affairs has introduced a significant policy shift for the Subclass 407 Training Visa, effective immediately from 11 March 2026. This change marks a decisive move by the government to curb the rising trend of “non-genuine” applications—cases where the visa was increasingly being used as a tactical tool to “buy time” and extend stays in Australia rather than for actual professional development.

What has Changed?
The core of this update is a new restriction on who can apply for a 407 visa from within Australia. Under the new rules, you can no longer apply for a Subclass 407 visa unless you already hold an approved 407 Nomination.
Previously, many applicants transitioned from other visas (such as Student or Visitor visas, 485 visas) onto a 407 to maintain lawful status while figuring out their next long-term migration step. By requiring a current 407 Nomination approval as a prerequisite, the government is effectively closing this loophole, ensuring the visa remains a pathway for structured occupational training rather than a temporary “holding bridge”
The Important Exception
There is one critical group exempt from this new rule: Government Agency sponsorships. If your training program is sponsored by an Australian Commonwealth, State, or Territory government agency, the new “407 Nomination approved” requirement does not apply. These applications are still considered high-integrity and will proceed under the standard nomination and invitation pathways.
Key Takeaways for Applicants
-
No “Visa Hopping”: Transitioning to a 407 visa from a different substantive visa (like a Student or Graduate visa) is now restricted for most private-sector sponsorships.
-
Integrity Focus: The government is prioritizing “genuine” trainees who have clear, structured training plans.
-
Government Pathways: If you are pursuing training through a government body, your eligibility remains largely unchanged.
-
If Genuine Training: Plan for your 407 Nomination to be lodged at least 6-8 months in advance of your current visa expiring.
For those currently in Australia on other visas hoping to switch to a 407, it is essential to consult with a migration professional immediately to explore alternative pathways, such as the Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) visa or offshore application options.
