The Nepalese community across Australia prepares to mark the most auspicious festival Dashain. The Dashain Tika time for 2025 has been officially released, with Sydney residents urged to observe the ritual at 11:54 AM on Thursday, October 2 2025.
The Antarastriya Panchanga Nirnaya Samiti, a respected Vedic body based in Kathmandu, announced the timings this week for cities across the globe, allowing diaspora Nepalese families to participate in Dashain with spiritual precision and cultural unity. For Australian cities, the committee has advised similar times around late morning on October 2, aligning with local sunrise and planetary positions.

What Is Dashain?
Dashain (also known as Vijaya Dashami) is the biggest and longest festival in Nepal, lasting 15 days and symbolising the victory of good over evil. On the tenth day, when elders place “Tika” (a mixture of yoghurt, rice, and crimson) and Jamara (sacred barley grass) on the foreheads of younger family members, blessing them with prosperity and long life. The festival reunites Nepalese around the world. Most Nepalese return home and visit relatives during the festival. The festival brings friends who grew up at once, schoolmates, and extended family together. This is the strongest characteristic of the festival.
Celebrating Dashain in Australia
With over 150,000 Nepalese living in Australia, Dashain holds deep emotional resonance for the community. Many take leave from work, wear traditional attire, and host family gatherings—mirroring the traditions back home. Temples and community centres in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and Hobart also hold special pujas and events, often accompanied by cultural performances and food sharing.
“This is a time for blessings, reflection, and reconnection with our roots,” says Dila Kharel, one of the renowned community leaders in Sydney. “Even thousands of kilometres away from Nepal, Dashain brings us together as one big family.”
