Every year, thousands of people from foreign nations come to Australia in search of work opportunities. To make sure that the pedigree of the intake is of the utmost quality, the government of Australia works on a list which includes a number of occupations to which one should belong to for finding employment in the nation. This list also defines the skill set that the applicant must display in order to find a job in Australia. These skill sets are worked upon carefully to make sure sustenance for a long-term period rather than a short length.
Today, on 17th January 2018, Australia announced the Skilled Occupation List for the year 2018. There are certain changes done on the list which includes giving job opportunities to professions not included before and also eliminating a few that were previously incorporated.
As published by the Department on the official website, these are the changes done.

New occupations added to the list
There are three new occupation tags that have been added to the list namely, psychotherapist, property manager, and real estate representative. On one hand, the profession of psychotherapist has no caveat attached to it, the other two have some.
Property Manager:
The profession must exclude any such case where
- The nominated base salary must be less than AUD $65,000.
- Businesses with less than 5 employees
- Businesses with less AUD $1M turnover annual
- Not located in Regional Australia
Real Estate Representative:
Excludes the following:
- The nominated base salary must be less than AUD $65,000.
- Businesses with less than 5 employees
- Businesses with less AUD $1M turnover annual
- Not located in Regional Australia
Occupations removed from the list
The occupations namely, Building associate and Hair or beauty salon manager has been removed from the list. This will be a bit of shock to the migrants as many wishes to work in this field in Australia.

Occupations moved between the list
Horse Breeder and Management Consultant trades have been moved between the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) for particular visa programs.
Caveats on occupations
The visa programs of Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457) and Employer Nominated Scheme visa (subclass 186) – Direct Entry Stream can no longer be used for certain occupations where the nominee’s position does not meet the ‘caveat’ requirements as specified.
These changes done will apply from January 17th, 2018 for all the applications made henceforth. For existing nominations, the change shall not be applicable. Also, in case of points-tested visas, the changes will apply to invitations provided on or after 17 January 2018.
