Career in Nursing and Midwifery

Working in health care can be very satisfying as you get to touch lives directly and help those in need. A more amazing sector within the health care industry is that of nursing and midwifery. You are involved with pregnant women and elderly population providing them medical support as needed. Also, being involved in healthcare gives you a chance of connecting with people on an emotional level and thus you get to make a difference in someone’s life. Midwifery

In this you will be working closely with pregnant women and provide them adequate support and care during the time of pregnancy, labour, birth and also during the postnatal period. You can choose to work at hospitals both private and government and also for patients at their homes. Midwifery doesn’t require you to have a nursing qualification but you must have an accredited midwifery qualification. You can choose to do a diploma for this by way of TAFE course which will give you credits for entry into a bachelor course for nursing later on.

Aged care

You will require a certification in nursing for this and you can also opt to do community care services related to the same. As a career path, aged care involved taking care of elderly and seeing that they get adequate medication. Your job will consist of taking care of their personal hygiene, assisting them with self-medication, helping in exercises as directed by the doctor etc… You can choose to work in a more public setting where you would also have a chance to get picked for private care at your client’s home. If you are working with a physiotherapist, then there will be additional responsibility to prepare a diet plan for your client and see its being followed.

Mental Health

Working in this can be very rewarding and satisfying but you must be compassionate and understand your patient’s problems. You will get to work with patients suffering with a number of problems like depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or psychosis. Thus you need to be strong and also keep your emotions in check.

Rehabilitation

As a nurse involved in the area of rehabilitation you will be working with patients suffering from chronic illnesses, long-term physical injuries and limitations. Your work responsibility will be to make them adjust to the new environment and reach highest level of functionality and self-dependency possible.
